About
June 20th. Summer solstice. 6:30pm-1:30am. Secret location. Welcome to this season of duality in non-duality, Gemini, yin-yang! The days are long enough to hold contradictions. Summer throws its glare off the nacre of daily life. Scaffoldings appear and dissolve, renegade, in the heat. Hide and seek. Is it a blueprint, stained glass, a laser maze? Grid becomes mist becomes grid. One year ago, the secret loft in Bed-Stuy signed its lease and Heat Index threw its first party on the summer solstice. Loft members hauled glass bricks from Home Depot and stacked them into a bar; we borrowed a subwoofer. By the third month we had lights. By the eighth, a custom Danley system and people we now call family. What a delight! Thank you for riding with us. For our first anniversary we're renewing that spirit of heaving optimism, this time with friends. This edition is a collaboration between Heat Index and Fiber (”Findex”), and a tribute to a year of values-aligned support between our crews and artists. Walk in at 6:30pm to a spread of snacks and refreshments by Fiber and Rotten Mother. Fiber’s approach to food is legendary – if you’re reading this, you probably already know. Rotten Mother returns to Heat Index with more thrilling culinary experiments, informed by the legacy of FOOD, the landmark 1970s artist-run restaurant in SoHo. Maharam, DJ and co-organizer of Brooklyn party series Final Passage, opens the night with deep selections informed by the melancholic landscapes of his Pacific Northwest upbringing and his background as a guitarist and jazz vocalist. NYC-based producer Laenz follows with a live set of improvised electronics excavating hidden waves in conversation with Alvin Lucier’s work around natural radio and his whistler and sferic compositions. San Huan, co-founder of Heat Index, takes us through the sunset with hybrid live set “where an abalone turns sunwards,” reworking a sunrise set originally composed for a Plumb Beach gathering that was unfortunately cut short before the music could be shared (a reminder of the fragility inherent to organizing in New York). Visiting from San Francisco, kk.Shucko is a fixture of the West Coast leftfield scene, recently co-founding experimental label Outer Veil and performing at Parameter, Osmosis, and Ever Afters Campout. As darkness falls, they’ll close out the live sets with a performance of sublime and terrestrial sound. At 10:30, Maharam returns with energetic cuts of low-end psychedelia, kicking off the dance portion of the night. He’ll pass the final baton to Oso Feo. Also visiting from San Francisco, Oso Feo is a true stalwart of West Coast community spirit: co-founder of radio station SutroFM, label Outer Veil, and campout Everything in Color. He’ll end the night in delirious electro and bass whimsy. We're so excited to celebrate the longest day of the year with you. DIY style, in all our utopian spirit and undone grace. See you there.
